Early Childhood Curriculum

Celebrating Over 55 Years of Excellence

The Early Childhood program at St. John's Parish Day School has been one of the crown jewel academic pre-schools of Howard County for over 55 years.

We believe every child's first school experience should be a magical one! St. John's Parish Day School is a stimulating academic environment where children explore, discover, laugh, grow and learn at their own pace.

Intentionally small classes give our teachers (two per class) the time to give each student the attention they need to flourish. Questions are encouraged and inspire eager learners. Children feel valued and respected - the ultimate confidence builders. Children spend time with a team of talented specialist teachers in STEM, Art, Information Literacy, Spanish, Physical Education, and Music in classrooms designed for each area of study.

Daily Chapel

Children experience Chapel every day, led by teachers, staff and the school's Chaplain. This time serves as a time of community, prayer, song and reflection. We provide an atmosphere that fosters spiritual grounding in the Episcopal tradition with respect for the beliefs of people of all faiths.

The Lower School Connection

Benefits of St. John's Parish Day School Early Childhood Program sharing a building with the Lower School (K through Grade 5) are endless. Our three- and four-year-olds are paired with Lower School students as part of our Book Buddies program. The pairs get together regularly to read books, do arts and crafts projects, attend monthly All School Chapel and age-appropriate school assemblies, and other events throughout the year.  Our preschoolers can grow in place through Grade 5. St. John's Graduates are highly sought after and go on to the best private and public schools the region has to offer.

Beyond the Classroom

At St. John's the classroom is merely a stepping-stone into the world around us. From venturing outside for science class to taking full advantage of our close proximity to Baltimore and Washington, DC, opportunities for wonder and discovery are limitless. Our little friends get tons of visitors as well from the local fire department to marine biologists from the Baltimore Aquarium to visiting authors and zoo animals!

Guidance & Discipline

Our classrooms and programs are designed to meet the needs of busy, energetic children so that discipline problems are minimal and quickly resolved. Children are encouraged to talk through and put words to their feelings. If a friend is having a rough day and happens to be disruptive he/she/they will be encouraged to take a moment out to calm themselves, think, and join the group again when they are ready. Responsive classroom morning meetings help to build social and emotional strength for each student daily.
